A Way out of the Night

A Way out of the Night

A Poem by Rudi J.P. Lejaeghere
"

Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind. Nathaniel Hawthorne

"

It’s not the shadows

nor the sounds in the night

that I fear

and even if I can’t place them

or put a name on it

in my head they write me

a way out of the night

in myself

I dress them

without anxiety with reality

a fixed form, a voice

that I want to recognize

it’s the morning and the light

that feeds my fears

and lets my heartbeat stop

it’s the day that I still

have to conquer.

"it’s the day that I still have to conquer." Oh, so true! So many write about their fear of the dark, a fear I do not understand. You can't get into much trouble when you are asleep. Without a light, you might, bump into a coffee table - but really! Why be afraid of yourself when all you have to do is open the door and step out into the real world?
(It should be, and "lets" my heartbeat stop. Your English is, by the way, generally excellent.)

Great poem, Rudi, it is in the light of day when most hardships arise, when we are amongst the world, then we go home at night and reflect back on those events, usually while laying in bed at night, our slumber being evasive. I agree the daylight is far scarier. It takes great courage to rise and accept the challenge of a new day.

You're right of course. It's so much scarier to really see the things we fear. Thanks for reading a.. read more

Thank you, Noor.92. Glad you liked it. :) Rudi
I can relate to your words, as I'm sure many can - sleep/dreams gives us a reprieve from the challenges faced daily - some challenges more challenging than others. While dark can be scary for some, it can be comforting - one can hide in the dark from reality....

Your poem is a bit dark and very well written. Always a pleasure to read you.

Good poem Rudi, I can relate on some level. A new day brings new challenges but often it brings more of the same.

Each day Rudi, dark or light, waits for us to conquer and revel in our moments. This was very well written and painted a fantastic picture in my mind.
