Goodbye

Goodbye

A Poem by DuttonJ

We both knew that this time would come.
I have been telling you since day one.
And yet it comes softly, almost unknown.
That is, until into this moment we’re thrown.
We stare and we stare trying to engrave,
Each other’s faces, the pictures to save,
Hoping that some remnant will be left,
For us to recall when alone and bereft.

Where is the embrace?
Where are the tears?
Where is the heartfelt voice, expressing fears?
Are we just broken?
With nothing left?
Nothing but empty eyes, that never wept?
Do we not know?
That this is our end?
That this is our last moment being friends?

Now, I see that we’re just strong.
We have the wherewithal to just move on.
We know that some time, even if far distant,
We will meet and revel in the moment.
For now, just know that I’m always with you,
And I’ll know that you will be with me too.
