The Last WeekendA Poem by Rowena SladeWhen most people look at you, All they see is another person. When I look at you, I see a strong Independent woman Who's as stubborn as a horse And won't go down without a fight. But now I'm sitting here, By your side In a hospital While you're struggling to live And there's nothing I can do about it. I feel so horrible. The strongest woman I know Is in a hospital bed Dying And I can't do anything To stop you from leaving. Tears roll down my face As I think of the memories we shared. It's so hard to watch you go When you were And still are Such a big part of my life. We will all miss you dearly. So right now, We'll take you home And keep you safe All throughout the night. Please don't go. Not right now. We still need to figure out How to live Without you here. But like you said, When you go You'll be able to see So many loved ones. While you're in line Waiting to see them, We'll try to keep you comfortable. So it won't be painful As your heart stops beating, Your brain stops working, Your heart stops pumping, Your body stops moving, And God takes your soul. I think you should know We love you So very much. You're so important to us. You'll never be able To be replaced. You're one of a kind. Well, You're gone now. You're in a better place. One without pain, Without suffering. Where there's only love And happiness. While you're up there And we're down here We'll try not to cry When we think Of how you're gone And how we miss you. But instead Smile, We'll remember The good times we had with you. So to those Who are still listening to this poem Try not to cry Because you miss her. But smile, Because you'll see her again One day. And do not be sad for the time she isn't here, But celebrate, The time she was. © 2014 Rowena Slade |
