Lone Rangers

Lone Rangers

A Story by Rose Marie
"

A mysterious magic separates Brother and sister. They are taken to other strange worlds, which tests their bond. Will they find each other or be forgotten in time?

"

We come from another beautiful world filled with animals, foliage, and Elven magic. We prefer to travel alone with only each other's company. Elven rangers, one more attuned to nature and lover of animals, the other a warrior amongst our kin. Twins, brother, and sister, known to be wanderers, skilled archers, and beast tamers, separated while out hunting in the Faery Forest, far beyond our home of Avondale, wandering, discovering new plants and animals. Searching for adventure around every tree and mountain we can find. We would return to Avondale to spend time with our family and other kinsmen.

After a visit back home, we went out to find adventure in the Faery Forest. It was a legendary forest; stories of the forest say that those who travel there get forgotten and lost forever…but those were just stories, or so we thought. It was a typical adventure, wandering around and writing down everything we saw, from the new plants to the creatures hidden within. Something felt odd, though the longer we stayed, the larger the place seemed. It was almost like it was expanding beyond this world's bounds; was it enchanted? Was it cursed? Were we going to make it out of this forest? Does it ever end?

We had been in the forest for only a few days…I think. Time seems to be different there; I can never tell how many days it's been. The night seems to come so quickly there. We got lost deep in the forest when I heard my brother say something about an animal he saw. I thought I saw a light, almost like a flame, in this small cove nearby. When I turned to call my brother over, he was gone.

“Aerios!” I yelled for him while looking around at my surroundings, hoping he had not gone far and could still hear me. After a couple of moments had gone by, I got no response, so I turned, facing the cove, and went in that direction. The cove was starting to appear farther than I thought, or at least that was what the forest wanted me to think. It sounds crazy saying it, but magic is ordinary where we are from, just not this kind of magic…this is something different…something unknown and dark; it felt wrong, but it felt like it was right.

It doesn’t make sense, but something called me further into the forest. I kept calling out for my brother Aerios, but there was still no answer. I worried about him and hoped he had found a way out, heading home to get help. After what seemed like days, if not weeks, I grew cold and hopeless. I was ready to give up thinking about my brother and wanting to go home. I started hearing a voice that sounded like Aerios, but it couldn’t have been.
