Apostrophe S

Apostrophe S

A Poem by Anna

When you leave me

I can tell you two things

For certain.

I will have loved you

Loved you despairingly"

And I will be there

Anytime you need me.

I will be at your side

In a whisper, in the middle

Of the night.

I come to your call

As my chest has hollowed

To make room for you.

I will arrive like the wind

Were under my wings

The entire summer.

My hands will remember

The lines of your face

And the deep, jutting corners

Of your collar bones

Under the tips of my fingers.

My tongue will move to speak

Just the words you want

Nothing else, like nothing matters"

Only you, then I in your

Long, dark shadow

Over the bedside table

And I, not in your bed.

My figure will grace your

Open doorway

Should you leave it open"

Should the light stay on

I will come.

Through your garden

Of stars, of endless black

Awash in gentle

Morning's white.

I fade into place"

The apostrophe

That follows your name.

I will be there

But I will have died.

This is so heartfelt and earnest. Such a swell of quiet compassion in every line. I misread the line as ‘As my chest has hollowed
To make a room for you’ which I thought was brilliant. It’s still very good as it is, I just loved how I misread it! Oops!
