![]() 4- Heidi- Home At LastA Chapter by Harley Rose
I'm so stupid! Once the bell rang I went to talk to the teacher about the homework assignment and I took too long.
"Umm... Heidi are you riding the bus this evening?" She glanced at the clock. "Yeah, Why?" I answered. "Your going to miss it if you don't run. Buses leave at 3:15." I glanced at the clock. 3:13. "Oh shi-," I covered my mouth, "-taci mushrooms. I gotta go!" I ran out the door and down the hall. Passing the Freshman hallway, I nearly ran over someone. I turned to see Gwen. She pointed out to me that the buses have left and that it was pouring out so I couldn't walk. She offered me a ride and I took it. The ride home felt relaxed, like this was completely normal. We talked about food and school and even a little about reading and music. If i didn't know better I would think this girl was my old friend's fraternal twin. They were so alike and yet so different. It was nice to have my mind taken off everything and for the first time in a couple months, I laughed. I laughed until my sides hurt and I felt like I was developing abs. I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard. Yes, this was nice. But it ended too soon as Gwen pulled into my driveway and I was forced out into the blistering winds and pouring rain. I shouldered my backpack and leaned into the door as I waved goodbye. "We should do this again!" She yelled over the wind, "Not tomorrow 'cause I got'a work but want a ride home Wednesday?" My heart leaped. Someone was reaching out to me. A friend. "That would be awesome!" I yelled back. "Oh and if you wanna eat tomorrow you should pack a lunch," she started to pull out of my driveway. "Oh, and don't forget my cookies!" It was an afterthought and she smiled. I leaned on the closed door and sighed in relief. The first day was over and it wasn't actually that bad. I dropped my soaking bag by the door, grabbed my books, and went to my room. I collapsed on my bed, wet clothes and all. Opening my book to see where I would go next. "Heidi. Heidi, its dinner time. Wake up. Oh my goodness you're soaked!" My mom shook me awake and through a pair of pajamas at my bed. "Change or you'll catch a cold," she said affectionately. "Wh-What's for dinner?" I was groggy. "Meatloaf and Ceasar salad." I groaned as I got up. Meatloaf. We had beef yesterday, too. I ate as fast as possible took a quick shower and plopped on my bed with new ambition to sleep. Tomorrow was a new day and as I was drifting to sleep I remembered the cookies. Oh s**t the cookies! I jumped up out of bed and ran down stairs. Turned on the oven and grabbed the cookie box mix and a bag of chocolate chips. An hour later the cookies were done and so was a messy kitchen. I threw them into a Tupperware and set it on the counter. The clock said 11:30. I should sleep but now I'm wide awake. I packed my lunch for the next day and trudged up to my room to try to battle my awakeness, if that's a word. I drifted to sleep once more and thought of what the new day would bring. © 2013 Harley RoseAuthor's Note
