The Routine

The Routine

A Poem by Tionge Rosalie Johnson

A teenager wakes up at 7:50 am, groans that he has to prepare for school.

A teenager wakes up at 7:50 am, groans at the pains in his side from sleeping upon a dirty mattress.

8:00 am, teenager brushes his teeth, combs his hair, eats cereal and groans that he has school today.

8:00 am, teenager runs hands through his hair, bolts for the door.

8:45 am, teenager arrives at school, groaning because he only has a few minutes before school starts. His friends say good morning. He wants nothing to do with them; it’s too early.

8:45 am, a child is heard crying, teenager kisses child on the forehead, looks nervous. He wants everything to do with the child and mother, It’s too early.

9:00 am, class starts. Teenager can’t understand why he’s in school. He’d much rather be home.

9:00 am, teenager leaves safety of his household, doesn’t want to be there, outside, with their guns.

9:15 am, when are classes going to end, he wants to go home.

9:15 am, when will it end, he wants to go home.

Wow, what a stark juxtaposition. Very well put together and powerful. Though it is, unfortunately, terribly true. Thank you for writing.
