The Cocktail Party

The Cocktail Party

A Poem by Tionge Rosalie Johnson

As I sit here, champagne glass in hand,

I ponder my love affair with money.

A mix of pleasure and pain,

its seduction,

reels me in.

Our flirtation with

big yachts, mansions, and country clubs.

Its pain of exchanging you,

and them,

for business meetings and trips.

I’ll probably divorce my relationship with money,

Even if it treats me right.

But I don’t plan on leaving,

my glass of champagne.

I’m a business woman

at an alcoholic prestige party,

whose worked her whole life…

to make this relationship work.
