First Cigarette

First Cigarette

A Poem by Rosa Carlyle-Mitchell
"

This is, for me, the feeling of the first drag, when you've taken some drugs and feel lovely.

"

When it hits your lips
and your pink, crinkled kissers pull,
it’s like sucking still sunshine.

It swathes the depths of your temper,
illuminating the trinkets, hung;
you feel this is the reason for time.

It swells out of the lit cave,
in waves or lucid fumes or flames
toxic with stalagmite truths, so ‘malign’.

But not to those who crave the promising pain
of the pierced steps into the day;
those who whisper, “this here is mine.”

This is a fantastic piece! Although I have never had this habit of smoking, but your diction was beautifully related, and I could really understand what you were writing about.

I Say give up the filthy habit. There are so many more habits to adopt! Well penned though!

your way of writeing poems is something else! I can learn a lot from your great poems. When it hits your lips and your pink, crinkled kissers pull,
it’s like sucking still sunshine. Great way to put it!!

Keep it up! :)

there are always the adverse effects to think about too, and i see that here, especially towards the end..."this here is mine" it is on me for being addicted that i have made myself sick with cancer.

always that shadow...

i smoked on and off since i was 14...but stopped for good about 4 years ago...people used to hate me because i didn't need it...i enjoyed it, but often just stopped when i was no longer...didn't have to have one....the last time i smoked i used to only smoke when i was at home...all through the day of teaching...never even brought them with me...

i like the imagery you place in your writing..."the pierced steps into the day"

that is quite good, Rosa.

~ yeah...i do... i am addicted to nicotine and at one point, i was addicted (for a bit) to marijuana too... ~ my nicotine addiction is too deep now for me to experience this initial attraction or maybe there's too much going on in my life... haha... :P ~ the addiction to marijuana was terrible... i would equate it with being hooked to psychiatric medication... i can't romanticize about either addiction now though... but it's good to read this piece and wonder about that interesting emotion called 'fascination'... the purity with which you've expressed it in words... is impressive... (in my humble opinion of course :P)...
