Exile Music

Exile Music

A Poem by Ronan Munnelly

Exile Music

The solipsistic pariah submerges himself

In a kaleidoscopic sea of sound

On an escapist impulse

Where is your loneliness

Floating with voices so far from the shore?

But the waves are the vacant folds in his heavy duvet

Drifting in and out of fantasy

He croons to distorted poetry

Only to find he’s slept till the afternoon.

And with no one by his side

Those transcendent notes, stranded and abandoned

like a plastic bag taunting from a tree in the wind:

You are the slow descending song,

Conductor of the dream sailors

You close your eyes and society's the isolator?
