"Once Before I Die"

"Once Before I Die"

A Poem by Ron Cole

Once before I die,

without having to regret,

I'd love to hold you in my arms

like I did when we first met.

Times were so much simpler then

and we were young and gay,

we loved and lived with all our hearts

every moment of every day.

Tomorrow was of no concern

we lived and loved today

your tender touch and loving kiss

took my breath away.

But time does not stand still

nor hold youth and love in sway

a terrible war loomed dark and fierce

and I was called away.

Absence is no friend of love

and cherished memories

are not enough to keep love fast

or fill a lonely heart's needs.

And so we went our separate ways

but with desperate regrets

about the space which changed our lives

that we'd both like to forget.

You're married now with family

and I think of you and sigh

I'd love to hold you close again

just once before I die.
