Just A Dream

Just A Dream

A Story by Linda Phillips
"

A dream of one Kaylah Williams, if only the dream was real.

"

A field, a peaceful field was all that was seen. The beauty from the glowing moon and the shimmering stars contrasted with the midnight blue sky. Blades of lush, green grass rustled softly against the gentle breeze, while leaves glided upon the wind, swirling and tumbling against it.
She saw Alex standing there, his hand held out for her. His smile was bright, his brown eyes reflecting the moon’s glow. Dark, raven hair was gently blown in the wind. His loud chuckle broke through the silence
“Kaylah, you look so beautiful...” His hand fell as he began walking towards me. After hearing him say she looked beautiful, she looked down at her attire.

Her shoes were simple ballet flats and a white dress adorned with pale, blue patchwork flowers. She wore silver bangles on her left arm, while two silver rings graced the finger of her right hand.

“Please, let’s lay here together, under the stars.” He sat down, patting the lush grass beside him. She sat down next to him, and he slung his arm around her.

He cupped her cheek, gently turning the girl’s face so he could stare into jade eyes. She smiled softly and he gave her a smile back.

“I love you Kaylah, so much.”

“I love you so much too love.” And with that, they closed their eyes and she awaited his kiss.

Her eyes opened to a flash of white. She groaned at the pain that came to her, slowly moving her hands to rub her eyes. As she lifted her arms, she felt sharp stings of pain grow with each stretch. After she rubbed them, she looked around her surroundings.

She was in a hospital room, an IV drip attached to her hand. The curtains on the windows were drawn back, rays of sun flowing in. There was a wooden desk to the left of the room, adorned with vases of flowers and small presents. Next to her bed was a small bedside table, with a lamp and small box.

She slowly sat up, causing more pain to her body. Then she grabbed the box and opened it. Inside was a small diamond ring. It had a silver band and the diamond was the shape of a heart. Tears came to her eyes as she admired the ring. She took it out and saw that there was an engraving on the band. The words simply stated, ‘Marry Me My Love.’

More tears fell as she slid the ring onto her ring finger. She smiled and couldn’t wait to tell Alex her answer. A knock was heard and she allowed whoever was outside in.
It was a man, and he was her doctor. She smiled towards him and asked him where her boyfriend was; she wanted to tell him that her answer was yes. He frowned towards her, and laid his hand gently against her shoulder.

“I’m so sorry… But he passed away in the night.”
