I stared at the screen which showed a blank page. I didn’t know what to write. I was thinking about writing my diary, as per the format we had to write the date day and then the time we were making the entry, the simple thought of ‘date’ gave me goosebumps.  I have no knowledge of the present date and time. It had been months since I got out of the small underground room that I had inhabited. It was not safe to go outside because of the radiation and you don’t know when you might stumble upon a nuclear weapon.

I was surrounded by a storm of memories. The war had started in 2025, when all the nations had started fighting over the little amount of water left on earth. The polar icecaps and major glaciers in the world had vanished a few years ago and the only source of water left was by filtration of sea water but soon that was also to be lost because we had reached such a desalination point of the sea that the climate around the earth was changing at a pace

it had not done in the past two centuries. Most of the countries in the world have become developed by now except for some of the South African countries. I still remember the day all the nations on the earth had started the war. There was no warning; all the communication and transportation facilities were deprived from us.

I still remember that on the day of war my father had presented me a new laptop. It was a technologically advanced laptop with 512 GB RAM and 1TB hard disk space. The keyboard was made of glass with the letter projected on it by LED lights beneath the glass. I tried to connect to the internet, but there was no response. I was just going to complain about this problem to my father. When he all of a sudden told me to go to the cellar and just as I entered and closed the door I saw a strong flash of light from under the hinges of the door. I understood all of a sudden as to what the flash of light was I had seen such a strong flash of light when I went to my father’s office. He worked in a nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing department of the Military, he was the head of the department. I had gone with him several times to see how nuclear weapons were created and tested. I understood that a nuclear bomb had struck our house or somewhere near. I tried to open the door but it did not move even a bit. I sat in a dark corner for a long time. Soon I lost track of the time.

Time passed, I have learned to live in the cellar. It has a one feet thick concrete covering, so radiation cannot pass through. I found some of my father’s radiation control dresses which he used to wear when he went to test a new nuclear weapon. I had somehow opened the cellar door and was able to make provision for food. We had started creating weapons that affected the human DNA only and not the trees and animals. But all the beings on being exposed to radiation at such a large scale and for such a long time, has started to mutate the DNA of plants and animals. All the flora and fauna have started to de-evolve. This is a situation where all the animals are moving towards a stage from which they have evolved in millions of years. This is taking place at a very fast pace. What it took millions of years has just happened in a few weeks time. The world is now mainly ruled by giant amoeboid like creatures. This is mainly because we are complex animals which make us prone to become extinct whereas the single celled animals are less prone to become extinct. As Charles Darwin once said “Survival of the fittest.” and primary creatures are the fittest of all.

I also found an abandoned robot in the cellar. We often used robots when we used to live a peaceful life. We used to change our robots quite often, but somehow this robot in the cellar had not found its place in the thrash but now I have repaired it and I have named it Vanessa. It gives me moral support when I feel lonely. I also have been successful in getting a radio transmitter. Every day I try to send messages on radio at different frequencies for other people living somewhere in the world.

The war has claimed our world to such an extent that there are only a few of us left to continue the human race. “What are you doing?” Vanessa asked. “Nothing. Just trying to write something.” I replied “And please don’t interrupt me when I am thinking.” There was a long moment of silence.  Then I typed the date: 1 January 0001!
