Childish Thoughts
There used to be a place called the Five and Dime My mom bought me a pair of sneakers there once Hi-tops in red For some reason I loved them on sight And wore them until they were full of holes My mother had been a seamstress She made all our clothes Garish plaids in bottoms and skirts Dresses with flowers on them so bright you could spot us coming from a mile away She in her Capri Pants and Buddy Holly glasses the height of fashion Covering the dining room walls in Avocado colored paint The rec-room in Pumpkin orange. We rolled around on the shag carpet in front of the big, box floor TV every evening. Our parents watching from their duel Laz-E-Boys Everyone else had a fresh pine for Christmas A silver monstrosity took over our living room Multi colored floor lights shining up onto the metallic branches and constantly changing it's shade As if we were waiting for Disco Santa to slip down our chimney! Dad and mom had a fondness for Oldsmobiles It is the only make of car I can remember them ever owning One big, gas guzzling, green monster after another Although always a comfortable ride We seemed to constantly be going somewhere They were a bit forgetful when it came to changing the 8- track tapes out though By 6 years old, I knew every song to date by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn Playing car bingo as we rolled on down a highway Singing along to The Man In Black I haven't forgotten the words to a one of those songs, even now As I look back on these things I can only find one word to describe my childhood Colorful Both figuratively and literally © 2013 RogueReviews
