I See You

I See You

A Poem by Rob Sowrey
"

Through the eyes of a young Afghan boy, he sees only pain.

"

I see you and I know I am scared,

that my home will no longer be safe,

in this land of my father and brother,

of my sister and of my mother,

oh why have you come to kill and destroy,

with machines on land and in the air,

blood and anguish all around me,

are you so immoral and do not care.

I see you and you fear and judge me,

that I am a pawn for terror and atrocity,

my blood runs out into my countries sands,

I hold on to my dead brothers hands,

oh why have you come to kill and destroy,

with guns in hand and a pinless grenade,

I suffer for the sins of my father,

as I dig out the earth for my mother's grave.

I see you and you point your gun,

in my face you point it for fun,

and water swells up in my young eyes,

are you sure you are not here because of lies,

oh why have you come to kill and destroy,

in the name of freedom and democracy,

I am not your enemy, done nothing wrong,

leave my family alone in peace and tranquillity.

I see you and I cry out in angered pain,

you have invaded my home and life,

but it is not your fault that you are here,

hunting terrorists I hear that you fear,

oh why have you come to kill and destroy,

spouting the words of your countries leaders,

do not kill my family but please leave us,

I plead for the lives of me and my brothers.

The early statement of the folks who lived in the territories you describe, referred to a sense of the individual without a collective responsibility. You were there as part of a collective will. The boy no doubt has not learnt to take responsibility for the actions of his society.

I think you'd wish you could take him away from all that, bring him home and understand your own childhood lived in securely and in joy. But you can't. Your reason communicates that to your passion. Have you been able to accept it? A poem that opens our poetry to the everyday of life in the world. Well done soldier!

finally. someone who thinks outside the box. as i read this it felt to me that you were writing from the other end of the rifle. not as a family member or even the soldier him/herself but as the child of the solders we are currently going against. this is very unique and my personal favorite so far. :D
