Mr. GigglesA Story by Robert CampbellJulian Applecore's best friend is a finger puppet
Eleven years old, short, skinny, and pasty with a bird's nest of black tangled hair, Julian Applecore is not a popular student at Mortician's Middle School.
Julian's best friend is a homemade finger puppet named Mr. Giggles. Several pieces of felt glued together form Mr. Giggles' small black body and orange face. Mr. Giggles patiently and permanently smiles with his coal-black pinprick eyes and mouth. An expression of emotion? Perhaps. Mr. Giggles tends to think of his face as something predetermined. Beyond his control. After all, Mr. Giggles does not feel as if he should be smiling. He is not happy. Nor is he laughing. To Mr. Giggles, the world is a mysterious, complicated place. The world has not been kind to Mr. Giggles. Much of the time, Mr. Giggles sits patiently inside one of Julian's dark pockets. During lunch-time, Mr. Giggles nibbles on part of Julian's ham sandwich or whatever it is that Julian happens to be having for lunch that day. One time Mr. Giggles went into the washing machine. Now Mr. Giggles has a crooked face. Julian Applecore is not a popular student at Mortician's Middle School.
