As the sun rose, the small family of four awakened in their small home in Luta. The sky was painted a bright pink as the sun started to ascend. The four quietly walked out of their small abode and removed the sign claiming the house as theirs. Not one person seemed to be awake yet except the group as they slowly walked towards the exit of the town.
Lily stopped as they approached the gates they had walked through five days ago. As she expected, the guards were still there, not the same ones but there was still someone there. They weren’t going to be able to go through the gates this early in the day that would be incredibly suspicious. She turned towards her brothers and gave them a small wave with her hand before vanishing. Her brothers looked back forlornly at the town they were so used to. Datara was the first to recover from his emotions as he reluctantly faded as well. Demetri sniffed miserably, his eyes brimming with tears as he turned away from the town. Caleb gave his younger sibling an encouraging hug as he started to fade, slowly though to make sure Demetri would follow. Demetri gave Caleb a sad smile as he quickly disappeared with Caleb right behind him.
Then they all appeared exactly where they had disappeared.
“Lily? What…What happened?” Caleb asked frightened, he was slowly observing his surroundings. Caleb was staring at what he thought was one of their shadows; to make sure though he counted. One shadow. Two shadows. Three shadows. Four shadows. Five…shadow. Wait…Five!? Caleb, Datara, Demetri and Lily made four. Caleb once again stared at the other shadow.
“Lily, I think we are being watched.” Caleb said slowly, his eyes never leaving the fifth shadow. Lily nodded but showed no sign of doing anything about the threat. Datara turned to face were the shadow was coming from. He stood there for a moment staring at the shadow; he then lazily lifted his head in an attempt to see the owner of said shadow. No one was in sight. “Well?” He asked an extremely bored expression on his face. “Aren’t you going to come out now, we already know you are there.”
There was a silence at first, then a frustrated sigh.
“Aw. It seems I failed again this time.” A voice said he spoke with an amused tone. Although he spoke as if he was about to reveal himself he made no movements to do as such.
“Come on out. Come on.” Datara urged, but it seemed as if he was also playing with the mystery person, his expression was now also amused.
Behind Datara, Demetri was smiling. He even though he realized the danger of the hidden person, the tone of both of the people in front of him made him smile. It was just his innocence and naïve nature showing once more.
Caleb took a step forward as he turned to face the unknown speaker. “Enough!” He yelled at the two, mostly Datara because he knew better. Datara tilted his head to smirk at his brother before continuing his conversation with the unknown speaker. Caleb let an exasperated sigh escape his lips as he ran his fingers through his hair. He turned to Lily who was also watching the conversation with an annoyed expression. She was already worried with getting her family out of this dangerous town and now they were being followed.
“Datara, stop please. We have to go.” Lily stated her voice soft and dripping with exhaustion.
Datara tilted his head to pout at Lily. “In a minute. I’m having fun.” Datara turned back to the speaker once more. Demetri was fidgeting in his spot he was getting excited and extremely curious about the speaker. He walked up to a point where he was at the exact same spot as Datara.
“Hey, Hey. It’s that kid.” The speaker said, laughing as he said it.
Demetri raised a brow and gave a suspicious glance at the dark the speaker was hiding in. “How do you know me?” Caleb stepped up beside him. “Yes. How?”
“And there is the eavesdropper! It’s like a reunion, I’m so happy.” The voiced giggled the sound of hands clapping also filled the air. “Hey, kid. I still have that apple…You sure you don’t want to buy it?”
Demetri jumped back at that. “You’re that merchant kid person!! AND No I don’t want your fake magic apple!” He then ‘hmph’ed and turned away from the shadows. Caleb stared at his little brother for a few seconds before sighing, pulling Demetri’s arm and leading him away from the shadows. “Hey, wait! Caleb what are you doing?”
Caleb grunted angrily and hissed “I’m leading you away from stalkers. Start moving your legs, you’re making yourself heavier than you already are!” Demetri huffed softly and started walking away with Caleb.
“Datara, I’m serious. Either figure out who that is or let’s go.” Lily ordered angrily.
“I’m afraid that’s impossible, young lady.” The person said, finally stepping out of the shadows. “The spell that is shrouded around this town prevents people like you” He was pointing at Lily. “And you too.” He then pointed at Datara. “With those powers of yours, from escaping this friendly little town we have here.” He was smiling as he spoke, hopping from foot to foot.
Lily leered at the young merchant.
“Oh how rude of me! My name’s Peter. It’s…very nice to meet all of you.” His eyes opened then revealing his aquamarine eyes. “It would be nice…to have your brothers here too, don’t you think?”
Lily and Datara remained silent.
Peter smiled. “Don’t you want to see them again? Don’t you…?” Peter’s voice was slowly turning sadistic as his eyes turned cold. “They didn’t pay much attention to what happened before…They tried to leave.” He stared at the gates that were now empty. “They’re stuck, it’s funny really. Do you want them back?” Peter asked again staring at Datara; his eyes were no longer cold but curious.
“Release them now, Peter. I mean it.” He said at monotone, his eyes held certain ferocity that stroke fear in Peter’s heart.
Peter tilted his head, wondering why this frightened him. He suddenly felt discouraged. He then realized things that may lead to his downfall: The fact that he was alone without Maxii who was still asleep and there was Lily and Datara ready to fight him. None of the townspeople were here so those two could fight them without being discovered. He was at a disadvantage, an extreme one at that. If he let go of the other two to avoid fighting they would fight him so they could escape the town. If he didn’t they would still fight him. Well…the last option he could try that had a small chance of success was…
Peter held his hands up in surrender, smiling nervously as he let his illusion fall. Caleb and Demetri appeared back at the gates, utterly dazed at what had happened to them. They slowly rejoined their group and stared at Peter. Said person was backing away slowly from the angered faces he was faced against. Slowly, his foot paces got quicker and quicker until finally he turned tail and ran. He was soon trailed by four unhappy siblings.
Peter ran through alleys and turned hidden corners trying desperately trying to lose the trail of the four. He was quickly running out of stamina though as he recklessly changed direction. Slowly, he turned into a small house, no longer caring if he was followed. The house was a second home from the usual one Maxii and Peter lived in. It was a back-up home for missions in Luta. Peter stumbled into the room and walked into the bedroom. He stopped at a bed that had a very human looking lump under the covers. He came down and uncovered the head of his partner. He slumped down to the ground and whispered “Maxii, Please wake up.”
He got a grunt in reply.
“Maxii, we got caught, okay? Don’t be mad, please.”
Maxii slowly got up from the covers and stared at his partner on the ground, covered in sweat. He then heard loud bangs and crashes on the front door of the house. “So, you tried to go solo and this happened…huh?” Peter nodded. Maxii sighed and slowly raised his hand up. He curled his fingers and turned his hand slightly as if he was telling someone to come closer and the door slowly creaked open. “If we are trapped, we might as well let them in right?” He smiled at Peter childishly, as he heard footsteps echo in their house.
Peter smiled back, fear evident in his eyes. “Right. We can’t afford to repair that door again.” He flinched as he heard the voices he had encountered before in the room with him.
MAXII
As I opened the door, I could see the fear increase in my partner’s eyes. I could feel the terror grow inside me as well but I ignored it. As the older and more experienced person, it was my job to keep everything going smoothly and too not lose myself in unnecessary emotion. That’s what I was taught in New Order. To comfort my friend I said, “If we are trapped, we might as well let them in right?”
I saw him perk up slightly, he smiled at me but I knew it was fake. His eyes still showed uncertainty and fear in them. He was trying to be strong for me. To also comfort me as I were trying to do for him. It was a common method for partners assigned by New Order were paired by compatibility and what they lacked in skills. They were paired because they were will compatible and made up for each other’s missing skills. Because Peter had been a member when he was very young and had no true contact with any family-like member ever since he lost his own family, Peter and I had a brother-brother and sometimes Father-son like relationship.
“Right.” Peter’s voice snapped me out of thoughts. “We can’t afford to repair that door again.” I smiled sadly at his joke and he returned the same forlorn grin.
Then they came.
The first one that entered was female. She had long brown hair and slightly tan skin. Her eyes were a unique purple color and she was glaring at both me and Peter. I then noticed a young looking boy by her side. He had a stunning green eyes and he was staring at me with intense curiosity while hiding slightly behind the female. Off to the side there were two other boys looking relatively the same. One was slightly taller than the one beside him. He had brown eyes and was staring at Peter with a smirk on his face. Peter noticed this and gave him back a smile. I was confused by this silent conversation but let it go. The one beside the brown eyed one was slightly shorter. He had hair that stopped at his shoulders and black eyes. He was instead of smirking at Peter he was glaring at him with disgust in his eyes.
“Would you be kind enough to release whatever spell you have cast over this place? We have to leave.” Datara asked us, but it sounded too much like an order. As Peter’s eyes downcast to the floor, I spoke for him. “I’m afraid we can’t do that.” I said this smiling, to cover the fact that I was more terrified than Peter. “It would complicate things. You…uh…have to stay here, ‘kay?” Datara, Caleb and Lily glared at me while Demetri actually looked as if he was considering it.
Lily turned to me “You are the one responsible for him, correct?” I thought for a moment and then shook my head. “I am not responsible for him. He is responsible for himself.”
“Lily, you don’t think you and your friends could leave anytime soon…?” I asked, once again. Demetri turned towards me and said. “We can’t leave because he put a spell on the town!”
I then turned to Peter and gave a questioning look. He looked at me with a sad expression and then he looked down to the ground in shame. “Well, you haven’t lied in a while. Why would you…” My eyes widened as I realized what Peter had done. “You led them here? You led all of them here!?” I knew I was screaming at him, I couldn’t help myself. The fear of the fact that he had endangered us and our whole plan was unreal to me. Peter didn’t answer he just held his head in his hands and stared at the floor.
I let out a loud sigh. My body felt limp as I returned my attention to the intruders in the room. “If you stay here any longer…You won’t be able to leave.” I warned them, my voice soft as I stared at the door, waiting.
“What do you mean? I’m don’t understand.” Datara said to me, I didn’t turn my head nor did I answer. Peter smirked at his question; they were wasting so much time by questioning my orders. Peter then looked towards me; I could see him through the side of my eyes. He was watching me with such intent that I knew what he was trying to tell me. It was too late for them. They were too close.
“Nevermind, it’s too late.” I said to the group as Peter went limp. His head hung slightly to the side and his eyes were glazed over; unseeing. Peter was already complying with New Order’s troops that were ever so close to the house they were in.
Maxii
The voice called to me in a loud voice. I looked around searching for the speaker. As he searched he noticed that no one else heard the voice except him.
Maxii, only you can hear me. Are you listening?
I nodded slowly, then shook my head at my stupidity and thought. Yes, I am.
The voice then continued. You have found them is that correct?
Yes, my partner and I have found them but I don’t think you are needed and—
There was a sickly pause as I felt that I should be silent. The sick feelings spread throughout my whole body, making me feel so much fear that I felt nauseous. I waited in fear of what the voice was going to tell me next.
It is not your choice whether we do or do not come. Your partner called us, we will come.
The voice was commanding and almost made me rethink arguing with it. I shook my head in disbelief. Peter has never called for help before such an act resulted in an intense punishment for not being able to handle it ourselves. I felt my body unwillingly lose all of the energy it previously had. I shook my head again desperately trying to shake off the exhaustion forced upon me.
Stop. Please stop. Go away, we…we…can. I can handle it. It was no use. There was most likely more than one person even though a single person was talking to me. They were all using their power to render me unconscious as they did to Peter. I couldn’t stop them from coming or from making me too weak to even speak. Defeated, I silenced myself and slowly closed my eyes. The sounds of the four intruders yelling at me slowly started to soften. The last thing I heard before losing consciousness was the loud noise of more people rushing into the room.
