Dissipate//Elliminate//Recreate (proglogue)A Chapter by TwoTailedTabbyIt all begins with the mysterious four....
A cold wind swept over their heads. They sat silently, side by side. None of the two uttering a sound. It was dark outside. The only light was from the stars for even the moon was not out tonight.
The wind blew once more, this time more forceful as it dashed over them.
One lifted his hand; a light spark escaped his palm. It flew gently, almost innocent as it settled on a speck of grass. It fed on the foliage, soon growing into a healthy flame. It continued to enlarge itself until it was a wild-fire. It was now in its own control slowly going into a quiet town.
Suddenly, the grass that led the fire to the town withered, limiting its fuel. The wind stopped blowing, making ANY chance of the fire flowing onto another field on grass impossible. Soon, the fire ran out of food, slowly burning itself out.
Two figures appeared to the first group of two.
The wind continued to blow and the grass slowly began to grow back. The sky suddenly began to become crowded with clouds.
‘I don’t think you should start before we get to our destination,’ the person stopped to leer at the slightly taller person. ‘Right, Datara?’ The wind swirled softly around the speaker, making his short blond hair flutter about slightly.
‘You ruin any and everything I try to do,’ the one named Datara groaned with the slightest bit of annoyance in his smooth voice. He then turned a bit to glance at the scorched plant-life the now-diminished fire made. ‘Every single time…’ He trailed off, never turning away for the fire-made trail.
‘Datara is right; you DO always ruin everything, Caleb.’ A young voice agreed, slowly shifting his weight from foot to foot. ‘It’s kind of annoying…’
Caleb flinched at the younger’s comment. He then opened his mouth the retort when he was interrupted.
‘Demetri, please don’t make fun of your older brother until we get to our destination, Understand?’ A feminine voice suggested, clouds thickening with moisture and suddenly pouring down with rain.
‘I understand!’ Demetri responded loudly, looking slowly for any cover to shield him from the water.
‘Demetri, Datara, Caleb, we are moving now. We mustn’t be late for the height of Luta’s population.’
‘That’s the next town, right?’ Caleb asked softly, grabbing Datara’s wrist to stop him from running from place to place in order to find cover.
The female nodded. She then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Slowly her body disappeared into the darkness. The rain immediately ended. Datara and Demetri’s frantic movements for cover ended as well. Caleb gave an irritated sigh and faded into the shadows. Shaking the rain droplets off of themselves both of the remaining boys vanished, leaving no sign of what had happened.
It was morning when the quad became visible once more. They were standing on a high-hill a bit farther from the popular town called ‘Luta’. It was in the beginning of the day when the inhabitants of this town got the most active, getting ready for their markets and such. This time was the best to observe the people. Inside the town were a common society that consisted of Peasants, Middle-class and Wealthy-Famous people. The higher class people were not very common around this town.
Datara was usually extremely pleased with visiting a new city. He would quickly blend with the townspeople and collect many objects rare in that were only in the town. This time was different, Datara was uneasy, almost unwilling to even enter the town. He wouldn’t even talk to his other brothers and his sister.
Finally Caleb asked “What is wrong, brother?” Caleb waited for Datara’s answer, which never came. “Datara…?” Eventually, Datara turned to his brother and then turned back to the town.
“He might be here…Tell Lily. DON’T tell Demetri.” Caleb nodded quickly, and then ran to Lily, delivering his message.
Datara then turned back to the town. He could now see the many people talking and moving around the town. He grinned; he loved the fact that he was soon going to enter that town.
Caleb was soon back at Datara’s side. “Shall we begin our operation?”
Datara looked at the blue sky thoughtfully for a moment then nodded.
Caleb was about to advance toward the town when he stopped in front of Datara.
“…Because of the danger that may be inside that place, do you wish to visit or…” Caleb trailed off for a moment, gaining a glint of pure malice in his light green eyes. “Do you want to destroy the dangerous place, Datara? I know that’s what you have been thinking about all this time.”
How odd Caleb could be at times. His drastic change of emotion from time to time amused and frightened Datara all at once. Nevertheless, he was happy to be in contact with Caleb. When in the correct state of mind he could be a vital ally.
Datara was staring at Caleb while thinking this. He glanced quickly at the town before shaking his head slowly. “I believe we can intermingle with Luta’s population without drawing suspicion.” He walked toward the town. Caleb followed almost immediately.
“Lily?” Caleb asked quietly, almost mumbling. He sat on the grass, closing his eyes as the wind caressed his body. “Are you sure that there is only a slight chance that we will be found?” Caleb opened his eyes, full of worry and fear. “You have noticed Demetri’s restlessness as soon as we approached this town. He is here…”
Lily gave an agitated sigh. “There is a high-chance of discovery because we know that fact now. The only reason we aren’t caught now—at this very moment we would be!—But.” She paused.
“But…?” Caleb urged eager to know the rest.
“It is all because Demetri doesn’t know for sure. He just believes he is being paranoid.”
“What do you mean: ‘know for sure’?” Caleb asked slowly, seeing the answer but not wanting to accept it.
“He knows that his old ‘home’ is here—subconsciously—he wishes to go toward the town even more now. If he did know that he really was here, he would purposely draw him to us.”
Caleb gave a sad sigh. “I see…” He trailed off. He glared at the town. He stood then suddenly he smiled to himself.
‘Okay, Mister.’ He thought wickedly. ‘We will play your game for now; let’s see who wins this round.’
Lily saw Caleb smiling cruelly at the building he was walking toward. Demetri and Datara were busy explaining to Luta’s guards why they didn’t have a passport. The story was the same with every town they visited. Each of these four was children from a small village that was attacked by rogue warriors and burned to ashes. Without families, they now wander to every town in search of a home. This story allowed them to pass through any town. Unfortunately, the story was not true. They no longer had a need for their families. They never really belonged to a family in the first place. Forcefully brought into the horrible existence they now lived in. Being here, but not all at once. Being alive and dead at the same time. A sad existence that these four cannot escape from.
“Are you coming Caleb?” Demetri asked cutely, tilting his head as he asked. He, Datara and Lily were already behind town-gates. Caleb gave a light smile to the rest of his group and ran past the gates with them.
He allowed his angry thoughts to dissipate out of his mind as he took in his surroundings. The sounds of people talking and selling rang through his ears. He smiled. It had been a while sense he had heard this sound. Since ANY of them had heard this sound.
He walked slower with each step, the rest of his group falling into place. Their position accurately placed so that each person faced each other in the circle they stood in. All of them were smiling. Happy to once again be with others. To not be alone. To forget that they were being persecuted. To be happy like they once were before He interfered.
They all smiled once more, this time bigger as they silently told each other they were going to go their separate ways, and as always. Demetri’s face fell. His eyes suddenly became cold and void of emotion. He glared at something as his eyes became glazed, unseeing. Lily sighed deeply. She was unhappy with what she knew was happening. She lifted her hands apart from each other, in front of Demetri’s face. She then slammed them together making a sharp sound. Demetri blinked confused for a few seconds. His mood darkened.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Demetri questioned softly. “I…I want to leave!” He yelled out loudly, drawing a bit of attention from the people around him. “NOW!” He demanded loudly, starting to go into hysterics. He backed away from Lily with frightened eyes. She quickly grabbed him and whispered something soothing into his ear. He looked at her with a certain calmness that seemed a bit inhuman. His eyes once again became glazed. Hs breath became slow and relaxed.
Datara looked at the scene with bored eyes. Caleb looked at Lily sadly. “Did you really have to sedate him this time?” Caleb looked at Demetri’s fallen form, sleeping in Lily’s arms peacefully.
Lily stared blankly at Caleb. “What do you think he was going to do next, Caleb?” Her voice sharp, cutting deeply into his confidence to speak. “Well?”
“He looked like he was going to run, but—“Caleb’s words were forced out of him.
“Where do you think he was going to run TO?”
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t lie to me Caleb.”
“I don’t know what your---“Caleb was once again interrupted.
“Caleb!” Lily yelled at him, voice merciless as he cowered at her voice. Caleb started to breathe uneasily, his eyes dilated staring at Lily in a familiar stare of fear she had seen earlier before. She felt herself calm. She gently handed Datara Demetri and knelt toward Caleb.
“N-no…Please stop...No.” Caleb said once then repeated once again over and over. He was completely terrified. This display was attracting more attention than they needed at the moment. Lily lifted Caleb slowly, trying to keep him as calm as possible. She slowly walked towards the INN and empty houses. She decided to enter an empty house which was less glamorous than the INN but was less pricey. It was clean. It had lots of room and one cabinet. Feeling that they would have to stay for longer than they had anticipated, she claimed the house as there’s and entered it. To claim a peasant house such as the one they had now, all she really had to do was put a sign that said ‘TAKEN’ at the foot of the house. They wouldn’t be bothered now.
Datara was sleeping in a corner with Demetri lying close beside him. Caleb was also asleep; he was on top of a blanket that lies on the floor. Lily was the only one awake at that moment, she didn’t know why. She thought that it could be the fear she put into her brothers. She also thought it could be the sudden change in staying in a town for more than one day. It could have also been that they were sleeping. Which they almost never did. The inhuman afraid of doing things that are human. Afraid of turning human possibly? Afraid of becoming what you so much desire…? Lily thought about this as she was overcome with the feeling of being watched. She knew better to ignore the feeling. Her feeling wasn’t JUST a feeling, it was instinct. Someone was watching her and her brothers. She looked over to them to see them stir in their sleep, faces scrunched up in an uncomfortable expression. They could sense her paranoia and the person making her feel this way. She allows herself to calm, her brothers became once again calm. She smiled to herself. As the oldest, she was to watch over her younger siblings. The bad feeling went away and she felt finally at peace. She then felt sleep come to greet her. She closed her eyes and fell asleep.
