Myriad

A Story by Number Six
"

He had no reason to live, nor no reason to die. Until he met it.

"

He walked through the deserted field as if it understood him.

A field, far as the eye could see, streched out into the never-ending reaches of the world.

He smiled sadly. And at times, it seemed as if the world smiled back at him.

However, there was a loneliness that could not be shaken. A vacuum, where there should have been a heart. Fear, where love was supposed to be.

Nobody was as happy or as sad as him, for there was no one else. Silence wept, where laughter's bed should have been. Emptiness, where a human being should be.

There was no reason to live, yet no reason to die. He did not grow weak, nor hungry, not thirsty; so why should he consider death?

Despite his inability to die, something told him that long ago he had tried, to no avail.

As such, he continued to walk. Always walking. Never running. Never resting. Something kept him going, but he had already deciphered that it was simply his instinct.

Nights flew by, and the dark blanket of the night continued its infinite cycle.

Strangely enough, one day his eyes caught something unexpected. There was something in the distance.

Much to his surprise, an unnatural instinct of intrigue invaded him. He felt like running towards it. He wanted to see it. What could it be? Was it even real?

He then found himself running as fast as he could towards the object as if there was an unspoken command uttered towards him. His eyesight was blurry: but he continued to run.

An unnatural force pushed his steps towards it. And even though he wanted to stop, he had no will of his own.

He reached the dark figure and stopped before it. He stood before for an indefinite amount of time.

Suddenly, it moved. And then he was able to realize that it was alive.

His eyes scanned the absurd creature: it had two eyes, just like him. It had a nose, and even a mouth, just like him.

In the end, he realized that it shared a head with the same characteristics as his own.

Except for the dark tendrils that flowed from the top of its head.

Intrigued by what these things were, he reached out and touched one of them. Much to his surprise, they were very soft and warm.

The creature now began to scan him equally. It seemed to be as interested in him as he was of it.

He scanned it with his eyesight, only to realize that its body was as strange as the rest of it: it possessed four limbs; two on opposite sides of the higher area of its midsection, and two others which it used to support itself upright.

Its body was covered with dark rags that overlapped indefinitely, which covered the creature's body, excluding its limbs and head.

The creature then placed its left hand on his face. This startled him at first, but the softness of its five fingers calmed him down.

He then looked into its eyes and saw something he had never seen before. He had no idea what had he just felt, but this only intrigued him even more.

Its mouth opened, and a strange sound left it: The sound it produced was the softest, most beautiful one he had ever listened to.

He then struggled to imitate sound, only to realize that when it came from him, it was much deeper and lacking in the creature's resounding beauty.

The creature seemed to be pleased with their exchange and curved its mouth upwards.

He then felt a strange sense of warmth inside of him that made him instinctively imitate the observed facial expression.

Dumbfounded, both creatures then remained still before one another for a long time.

However, this peaceful exchange was interrupted when the creature then removed its hand from his face.

He observed with awe its curious eyes as they set upon his left hand.

It then took his wrist in its hand, gently analyzing it.

Slowly, it compared it with its own hand. And after a moment of awe, it intertwined its fingers with his own.

Then he felt something that he had never felt before: it was a rush of heat within him, unlike anything he had felt before. He felt good. Unnaturally good.

Instinctively, his mouth curved upwards once more. Now deciding to give this expression a name, he called it a "smile".

The creature, while still holding his hand, then turned around and set off into a sprint, dragging him along.

His instinct rang loudly inside his head: Danger, Danger, Danger.

But a part of him didn't want to let this creature go. It was a magical force that forbid him to let go. Almost as if a god were possessing his body and not him.

...

They had been running for almost half an hour now. The sky continued to rotate, with the sun slowly attempting to disappear.

Like a rock on the bottom of a river, his mind was slowly numbing.

However, he had succeeded in giving this creature a name.

He had thought of it for quite a while now, and basing its name off of his; Aa, he decided to give the creature the name, "Ee".

And now slowly remembering something from his past life, he finally recognized Ee as a female creature.

They had been running for such a long time that when Ee finally stopped, he involuntarily crashed into her, knocking her over.

Ee whimpered as she hit her head on the ground.

He stood frozen.

She slowly moved until her body was on a sitting position, and only then was he able to notice a small bruise on her forehead.

As he then decided to approach and tend to her, Ee let out a continuous cry of pain.

A painful expression covered her face as he stood still for a few seconds but then continued to approach her.

Ee continued to cry in pain as he hovered over her, unsure as to what to do.

Remembering the gentle warmth of her hand, he decided to place his left hand on top of her head, moving it back and forth so as to somehow comfort her.

She then looked at him with sad eyes, which were glassy small waterfalls.

He smiled at her, trying to somehow reassure her.

Much to his relief, she smiled back.

As she then began to wipe the liquid from her eyes, one of the strings then formed a droplet, which fell to the earth.

He then took her hands and raised her back to a standing position.

They briefly smiled at one another as they felt the earth under them shake.

Startled, they stepped back.

Aa found himself instinctively standing before Ee and the source of the tremor.

Both of their eyes were then wide open as they saw a large shape rise from the ground.

It was an earthy color, and it continued to rise upwards until it was about three times their size.

When it reached its top altitude, the shape began to sprout green bits that grew continuously until they covered the whole top of the strange shape.

They stood there shocked, trying to figure out what this object was.

However, the object remained still. Perfectly still.

Aa continued to scan the object in question when he noticed Ee approaching the object, her left hand extended towards it.

He then pulled on her right wrist, keeping her from touching the object. She shot him an inquisitive glance, and he shook his head.

Ee, however seemed fixed in touching the object, and quickly shook his hand off of her and continued to approach the object.

He grimaced as her hands contacted the object, but nothing happened.

At least, not instantly.

She then let her hands fall at her sides again and turned to face him.

He then noticed as her eyes grew wide, followed by her pointing a finger behind him.

He turned around and noticed the setting sun as it slowly posed itself near the edge of the land.

This was nothing new for him though. However, he found himself slowly infected by her amusement, which eventually caused him to smile.

She was also smiling, but with a much more genuine interest.

Slowly, she stood by his side.

An idea then began to run amok in his mind.

But would he have the will to do so? He wondered how she would react. Would she be angered? Frightened? Happy?

His thoughts continued to race as the sun continued to set.

In a small moment of decision, he had made up his mind to do so.

He went as slow as he could so as not to startle her.

Slowly, his fingers began to interwine with hers as the sky continued to darken.

She looked down at their hands.

She then looked up at him.

Their eyes met in the half-light.

In the dark, their faces were no longer visible.

The only lights then were the faint glimmer of the union of their eyes.

This one is still in the "draft" stage of metamorphosis.
I am publishing it because I would very much appreciate opinions on how to make it better/space it better/overall improve it.

Overall I really like the pace and setting of the story, maybe on this part :
'He then found himself running as fast as he could towards the object as if there was an unspoken command uttered towards him. His eyesight was blurry: but he continued to run.
An unnatural force pushed his steps towards it. And even though he wanted to stop, he had no will of his own.'
you're emphasising a bit too much on how he feels forced to go but apart from that I don't think you need to change much.

Yes, I see your point: I did emphasize that a bit too much.
