A Poem by Rita L. Sev

A folded flag and empty boots

attest he’s paid the price,

his name forever etched in stone

recalls his sacrifice

and now our greatest tribute

to pay homage to his fall;

ensuring that there’s justice

and liberty for all

A barbecue and time with family is great, but providing freedom for all every day is the gift of a soldier. The least we can do is to maintain it, and pass it on.

This is how we poets remember those who have fought and died for our Freedom of Expression. I was inspired by your second verse to write another version using some of your words which you may have as a gift:

and we add to this tribute
respecting those who fall
when we too fight for justice,
“and liberty for all“.

Nice... Thanks, Aethereal.
I agree. We need to be thankful for the freedom we have and we need to ensure we don't forget the cost of freedom. Thank you for the outstanding poetry.

Thanks, A - and let's not forget Army, Navy, Air Force... :)
I'm glad you wrote this, because I didn't write anything for Memorial Day, and it should certainly be remembered.

An important remembrance that should be in our hearts every day... Thanks, Marie.
I have been away due to deployment and this is one of the first poems I read today. It is simple but poignant Rita. So many brave souls put their lives on the line for the defense of this wonderful country. Hopefully as we remember their sacrifice we find the purpose to push for a better future. Loved the poem.
