Pumpkin

Pumpkin

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

.

"

A pumpkin in his pumpkin patch

all through October’s chill,

adventure burned his very core;

he hankered for a thrill

The other pumpkins laughed at him

“You’re quite out of your gourd!”

But he just knew he had to leave

that field made him so bored

One day there came a raucous pair

they picked him from the bunch;

his life would be much different now,

he surely had a hunch

But he had not quite understood

an autumn pumpkin’s role

and soon his happy dreams were squashed,

out of our friend’s control

Now he wears an eerie grin,

his hollow eyes inert

at least his life was not in vain ~

who’s ready for dessert?   ;)

Rita, I always enjoy a good smile, and your poem made me smile. You're exemplary use of black humor is, quite simply, definitive of the genre. The only poem I've read that made me laugh harder was Spike Milligan's "Have A Nice Day". I guess life isn't always greener on the other side, huh?

I started smiling from “You’re quite out of your gourd!” and did not stop till the end of the poem! Great personification of the pumpkin....poor dear made to wear a silly look on his face and then destined to become someone's tasty treat! :) Great rhyming. Lydi**
