Lion's Tooth

Lion's Tooth

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

Here it is, Rich... I like yours better! :)

"

They say that you are just a weed

though many critters do you feed.

You start life with a fuzzy head;

the roaring mower you must dread.

Like wild flowers that bloom in spring,

you cover almost everything.

Gardeners aim to kill your blooms

with horrid vile toxic fumes.

When young I used to search for hours

for these weeds I thought were flowers.

Now my inner child cries

at every dandelion’s demise.

This poem is so sweet with its rhyme and childhood connection. It inspired me to write another rendition of this poem which you may keep as a gift:

Lion's Tooth

Why should you bring gardeners dread?
I don't treat you like a weed
fuzzy yellow toothy head
turning snow white into seed.

As a child I'd watch you spread
fulfilling my every need
for a pretty flower bed
as my Winters would recede.

:) Thank you, Pryde!
Reminds me of being a child, before someone convinced me that a pretty, yellow flower that could tell me if I liked butter was just a weed.

Sweet and savory, Rita. Fluid rhyme and sweet sentiment. Nicely done.

People don't appreciate the beauty that is right before their eyes... sad indeed. Nice tribute to something no one else would think of.

Excellent poem. It would have been a shame if you hadn't submitted it. When I was a child (my family was somewhat poor), we would at times gather dandelions, fry them in butter, and eat them. That was long ago, but as I recall they were all right with a slightly bitter taste.

Rita, I love this! Great images and rhyme. It is so true too. I remember picking dandelions for my mom and now my kids pick them for me. I get so sad when they close all up inside the cup. My sister loves dandelions and I'm pretty sure that she still insists they aren't a weed!
For you-Here's a little poem you inspired. :)

But, in the twilight of its days
When its mane has turned to grays
Across its head, I blow with might
‘til all the tiny seeds take flight
I close my eyes and make my wish
To be forever young like this.
