To a Tee

To a Tee

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

Open your t-shirt drawer...

"

I’ve had a revelation ~

an odd epiphany ~

if one would like to know about

the character that’s me

No, you may not read my journal ~

that I simply can’t endure;

if you want to know me better,

check out my t-shirt drawer

Some will tell you where I’ve been,

like Portland and Cape May;

Washington, DC

and the San Francisco Bay

My “Once a Bambie” t-shirt

recalls my high school days,

and two tout my affinity

for the Big Bang Theory craze

I have a few that testify

to vegetarian style

and some emblazoned “Phillies” ~

around here, these get a smile

Several from the Christmas show

in New York every year

And many bear ironic notes ~

this is my common gear

Our garments get so little thought,

yet say so much ~ who knew?

you might be surprised to know

what your shirts reveal of you.

Wow. A fantastical write that goes deeper than the obvious for you are telling us that some garments ( Tees or T shirts ) show our likes and dislikes and define some aspect or our loyalties whether in the field of sports or religion or even politics. You are a social genius if I may call you that for most of your poems touch on social issues and behaviours of humans in their enviroment of life...Excellent...:)

Love this one and now I feel guilty folding clothes without coming up with a poem! I do enjoy reading many of your tees and, yes, they do fit your personality. One shirt that I think you should have is a shirt that comes from the Gilmore Girls series -- it's a picture of a girl and it says "Reading is Sexy." Each time I see this shirt, I automatically think of you!

Haha, my T-shirt drawer is completely over loading, I buy too many clothes although if you ask me a girl can never have to much makeup, too many clothes and never enough shoes! Ha.

Oh and, I want that T-shirt, hehe.

Woo! OMG, I done that the other day, too! I hate it.
Very whimsical. I like it. I worked in a garage for a while and we would get these boxes of rags which were made from recycled t-shirts. It provided many laughs and flashes from the past. Angel recommended I read your work and she did not lead me wrong. Nice work.

Thank you so much, Shane! I'm so glad Angel sent you! :)
I love the story here as well as the sing-song rhyming nature of this poem. I was inspired to use some of your words to write my own version of your first two verses using overlapping rhymes whereby I alternate seven syllable 0/0/0/0 meter, and six syllable 0/0/0/ meter: Since most of this contains your words and ideas you had better keep this as your own as a gift from me. Writing this is both fun and good practice for me:

Epiphany

I've had a revelation
an odd epiphany.
Now, here's my explanation
of how it portrayed me.

You may not read my journal
for this I can't endure.

Thanks! Sometimes I have no idea what my mind will do next... :)
I found this to be a delightful poem of relevation and enlightenment, it is so true, the tee shirts we wear and store DO say a lot about ourselves and at least our state of mind when they were first obtained. You have shared a good sampling illustrating your point and I found this poem, thoughtful and intelligent. Thanks for sharing this gem.
