Morning News

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

Too much saccharine with my morning java...

"

Good morning, Brittany!

Good morning, Ted!

In the news today,

Eighty-seven are dead!

An inferno, an accident,

An attack unsurpassed…

Now here’s Joe

With the weather forecast!

Thanks, Brittany!  Today,

There’ll be clouds with some sun,

Now here’s Beth with the traffic,

Won’t that be fun!

Good morning at home,

And thank you, Joe!

There’s an eight-car pileup,

And the going is slow!

Here’s our high-tech chopper

For a view that’s live ~

Look at that mess

On I-95!

Now back to the news desk ~

Brittany and Ted?

Wait’ll you hear

Which celebrities wed!

That’s all the news is,

A candied word-fest

Giving no time

For our minds to digest

Afraid that emotion

Would make it too real ~

God forbid, we allow

For the masses to feel

My feelings exactly. I rarely watch any local newscasts anymore because of the inane chitchat and feigned cheerfulness. And those traffic reports are a total waste of airspace. I rely on newspapers and news magazines to keep abreast of the news. But as they die off, I know eventually I'll have to rely on the internet--but NOT those nitwits on local news.

Feigned cheerfulness - that's exactly what it is. Thanks, Rich.
sometimes the broadcasts should be titled, "All the gossip we can come up with!"

That is so true, Chris!
Even the news readers are part of the fickle world of celebrity culture, I prefer the radio myself as at least you don't have to view those insincere TV cheesy grins!

Splendid Rita, there's a valid point within your quirky poem!! ( for details see the above )

And you're right about everything delivered with an exclamation. You've captured the absurdity of it all delivered like cheerful robots. No human beings interact this way. Reminds me somewhat of the Don Henley song Dirty Laundry.

I hate the fact that people smile through anything on the news. They are so plastic and phony that when real tragedy hits you can tell that they are faking the emotions. Spot on poem here Rita!

Exactly, Eddie - it's like at some point, they completely lose their humanity. Thanks for reading!
You are goooood! ...at making me laugh. Talent is when you forget you are reading like I did here. I stopped watching the news several years ago. We got rid of cable and local tv, just too depressing.

Yep - exactly what reminded me of this one... Thanks, Pryde!
This is excellent. Great structure, great word choice, and what a unique and untouched subject matter that still hits home! Love it.

Thank you, Meesh!
This made me chuckle and think how sad at the same time, so true.

Yes, it is a running joke in our house - and a constant complaint. Thanks for reading, R&B
