One Single Grain of Sand

One Single Grain of Sand

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

In the grand scheme of things, it can only mean squat.

"

One single grain of sand,

        pebble

                stone

                        rock

                                boulder

Our own significance,

in the eye of the beholder

A tiny drop of water,

        puddle

                creek

                        river

                                ocean

Humanity has given itself

the ultimate promotion

The smallest little seed,

        sprout

                bud

                        sapling

                                tree

There’s hope still for our growth

and all that’s yet to be

This is wonderous, I've never seen anything quite like this. Well, maybe nothing as intricate and seamless. There are several poems here, existing both together and beside one another. What brilliant execution ....Bravo!

Thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed this. Not my usual style, but I enjoyed the journey...
Reminds me of a poem from long ago.
"Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.

So the little moments,
Humble though they be,
Make the mighty ages
Of Eternity." I remember reciting that one in front of a class way back when. I think it was credited to "anonymous". Your words reminded me of that poem....but your meaning is much more far reaching. Yes, there is still hope for humanity. Rita, the imagery you employ is lovely. I enjoyed the poem...and thanks for sparking my memory! Lydi**

Hi Rita. A beautiful write and message. Lovely presentation. Skillfully crafted free verse. Imagery is good as are the descriptives. You paint a vivid picture from its smallest point to its greatest achievement that any reader can appreciate. Flow is good as is the line to line transition and breaks. Nice rhythm and enjambment. Good depth of feeling. Thought provoking. A lovely way to express how we still have the ability to grow by what we can see in nature. Good word choice. Excellent closing lines. Well penned and an enjoyable read. Write on!

I love the dynamic build-up of each thing. It's simply marvelous, I wonder how far could you really push this poem. This idea. This....Growth? Hmmm. :) Nice work.

Depends on which end of the spectrum you're looking at. At the lower end it encourages.

I like the austerity of the poem and its lessons.
