How did I get so popular?

On Facebook and on Google

I have so many friends

On Pintrest, Linked in,

Tumblr and Vox; the list just never ends

 

I love to talk to all my buds;

Well, text or PM or Tweet

I relish the chat rooms and forums

Where a group of us can meet

 

And yet I wish quite wistfully

Though it’s to no avail

For real encounters, face to face,

No IMs, blogs or emails.

 

Yes, I surely realize

This approach is too conventional;

Still, I really liked it when

My friends were three dimensional.

I don't think it's a silly thought at all, Rita. The internet has given birth to the one-dimensional character; no matter how hard we try, we are never really sure if we truly know the web bud. There are countless trolls out there pretending to be celebrities or good people, pretending to have a terminal disease so click "Like" or "Share" so they will get well. My husband is particularly repulsed by the religious ones -- they post some picture or tale and demand that you post to 10 of your friends or "God will get you" basically. It's like chain letters, just as stupid and quite insulting to honest people of faith. That flat one-dimensional persona can hide a lot.

That' so true, Annie - those posts that demand "share this or you will be sorry..." I avoid those and am annoyed when people send them. I have to say, though - I get more of those from people I actually know... Lol! Thanks for the read and insights!

It's ironic when I look at my students, who lack even rudimentary social skills, but who will say that they 200 "friends" on facebook...

That's true, Angel - actually, few of my facebook and 3_d friends know me through my poems. In that aspect, my WC friends know that part of me best.
