First HeroA Poem by Rita L. SevEvery little girl should be so luckyQuite young, I watched with shining eyes Each
move my father made Knowing
he was big and strong And
never felt afraid
He
strutted through my life, so proud In
days my tresses curled Proclaiming
with his every act “The
best Dad in the World”
In
later years his feet of clay You’d
think would deem him smaller In
my view, though, this human side Made
his stance that much taller
It
wasn’t ‘til we knew that he Was
in his final year That
my lion of a father Would show his growing fear
It
wasn’t fear of suffering, Or
whatever might come after He
knew that he would surely miss The warmth and unheard laughter
He
held on strong, and then let go I
watched his spark diminish He'd made his peace in truth, and now His time with us was finished
Gone
but not forgotten I
recall his joyful ways My
Daddy, Dad, my father My first hero... Hero always.
