From Rags to RichesA Chapter by kIIty
“You open it” I shoved the letter into my mother’s hands. She smiled, “no, you open it” she pushed the letter back. “You open it” I repeated. “I’ll open it” Kyla huffed. We both watched as my best friend tore open my letter from Stone Prep Academy. It seemed everything happened in slow motion, I worked too hard not to get accepted, and late nights studying for school would be worth it in the long run.
“Blah, Blah, Blah, Paula MacFarlane, your last name is a mouth full, that’s not what it says, but” Kyla stammered, “we are proud to have” My mother began to yell and jump up and down, “My baby got accepted” I grabbed the letter and scanned it, “Yay” I said, with a tint of sarcasm.
“You excited?” Kyla asked bouncing on my bed. “Kinda.” I said half-heartedly. “Kinda?” she questioned. “I don’t want to be ‘the new girl’” I stated. “The new girl?” she asked. “You sure are asking a lot of questions, I just don’t want to not know anyone…” I said fiddling with a bottle of black nail polish. “You’ll make friends” she assured. “Doubt it” I painted my pinky. “You will” she rolled off my bed. I laughed. “I wish you would come with me” I whined. “You know I can’t, going to school in California is going to be a great experience.” I rolled my eyes, “Lucky”
“You gotta call me everyday” Kyla ordered dipping her spoon in her chocolate ice cream. “How can you eat that?” I said starring at her chocolate ice cream. She laughed, “You’re the only black person I know that doesn’t eat chocolate or chicken.” She stated. I laughed, “You’re the only Asian person I know who hates fish.” Kyla smiled, “Touché” she flicked ice cream that slithered its way down my front. I shrieked, “Get it out! Out! Cold” I jumped around the room.
“Girls, shut it down, Kyla your mother is coming to get you in the morning” my mom yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
“Morning came too fast” Kyla complained. “Indeed” I agreed. We hugged, “Zai Jian” I waved as she threw her bag in the trunk, “don’t have too much fun in Cali without me.” She chuckled, “I won’t, and you better call me later.” She ordered, “Bye” she waved at me. Then her mother drove down the street towards the airport.
