A Chapter by Rin Kagamine

~Prologue~                *Temple of Anubis*
    The entrance to the temple of Anubis had a heavy set of gates that led into a massive hall with stone columns and a series of chambers lining the walls. These chambers were lit only with candles. Incense would also be burned in the chambers to purify the air.
    The priests of the temple would proceed through these chambers. The chambers would slowly get smaller and the lighting significantly reduced, creating an atmosphere of mystery throughout the passage until one reached the chapel and shrine.
    Inside the shrine resided the Naos. The Naos is a stone tabernacle which housed the great statue of Anubis, Egyptian God of the Dead, Tombs, and Embalming. It was here that it all began.
    The priests of Anubis were busy that day. They had to be, otherwise Baruti would punish them for being lazy in the god's presence. Punishment was especially worse to those in the shrine. Baruti is the high priest of Anubis and to say he was faithful towards the god of mummification is the understatement of the millennium. Everyone both revered him and were frightened by him.
Baruti watched as the priests cleaned the Naos with his sharp grey eyes. It was an important job and must be done correctly. Otherwise all of Egypt would suffer a horrifying punishment from Anubis. While most would be honored at having this sacred task, Khu was terrified of being assigned to it. Khu tried his best to avoid doing anything that would catch Baruti's eye.
    'Too bad it didn't work', thought Khu, cringing every time Baruti's sharp eyes focused on him.
    "Khu!" Baruti yelled, startling the poor man and causing him to not pay to what he was unconsciously triggering. As Khu jumped in fright, his hand slightly touched one of the many hieroglyphs inscribed on the box-like structure.
    "Pay attention! Lord Anubis does not need, nor want for any matter, a dirty Naos," Baruti shouted at Khu. Khu winced and was about to keep going with his work when he noticed (at the same time as Baruti mind you) a shape forming directly in front of him. All of the priests in the shrine stared in shock as Anubis himself appeared.
    "My lord!" exclaimed Baruti, causing them all to snap out of it. They all bowed to the god.
    "My priests," said Anubis, looking at each of them, " I have a request for you."
    "Anything you wish, my god, we will do to the best of our abilities," replied Baruti. Anubis nodded in his direction.
    "A young girl, with hair black as black could get and strange eyes and tongue, will appear directly in the middle of the Nile. This girl is my student and my...queen," said Anubis. The priests appeared in shock at his words. Not only did he have a student, but a queen. Did that mean that they were...
    "Now to get it out of your heads we are not, nor ever will be, married. She only rules over me and Osiris," the priests gasped in shock. Anubis held up his hand to silence them.
    "Yes, I know this is hard to take in. However I must know that I have your oath that she will remain a secret to those outside of this shrine," he paused at their murmurs of confirmation, "Good. She is the Queen of Death. She rules over anything even remotely related to death. That includes the gods.I have taught her all there is to know of the afterlife. She is knowledgeable in all subjects and is the perfect weapon against both humans and gods."
    "What is it you want us to do exactly?" Khu asked. Anubis smiled at the young man.
    "I want you to protect her, *Khu. You and Baruti must try to keep her safe from those who would try to utilize her abilities."
    "When will she appear? We need to know how much time we have to get ready for this goddesses' appearance," Baruti inquired. Anubis looked at him confusedly (if a jackal head could look confused).
    "Goddess? Oh no, she's not immortal. She's human," said Anubis in a matter-of-fact tone.
    "EHHHHH!!!!!"
    "As for when she'll appear...either at dawn or dusk on a day when the lotus flowers are in full bloom. Do not retrieve her at any other time than that or there will be consequences," Anubis continued as if the girl being human was common knowledge and the priests did not just yell out in shock.
    "Now if there are no more questions..."
    "WAIT!" Khu yelled, slightly hurting Anubis's sensitive dog ears, "What is the Queen's name?"
    Anubis stopped on his way back to the afterlife. He looked directly into Khu's eyes (and soul too probably) and smirked at him. It was a smirk that would make the most fearless thing ever hide under a rock. Heck, the rock would bury itself into the very core of the earthat the sight of that smirk. It's making the writer of this story imagine it and scared to turn of the light to finally get some sleep at the thought of it. Yeah...it's that creepy.
    "Her name is""
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    He ran.
    He ran as fast as he could to the palace. This could be his lord's chance. He knew her appearance and when and where she was to appear. As soon as he got that piece of information he left, not hearing another word but what did it matter. Taking possession of such a girl would ensure that that insolent brat of a pharaoh to fall and his lord would take the crown. As was his rightful fate.
    Finally the palace was in sight. He ran at full speed to the main hall. There his lord was seated with his lovely wife. He bowed and looked up at the two with a smirk.
    "My lord I have great news."
~Time Skip~~~~~~~~~~
    Sefu was slightly annoyed. After calculating where the exact middle of the Nile was, he had sent a servant to watch the spot at all times. They waited for the lotus flowers to be in full bloom only for the stupid girl to appear sooner than expected. Not even close to dawn OR dusk. Not only that but the girl has been unconscious for three days now.
    The only good thing in this complete debacle is that the girl was in his possession. She was quite pretty as well. Even more beautiful than his wife, Jamila, who's very name meant beauty. All Sefu needed now was for the girl to wake up and help him get his nephew off the throne.
    Noise suddenly filled the hall as shouts came in from outside. Sefu looked up in time to see the doors open and reveal his nephew, Tutankhamen, and one of his three advisors, General Horemheb. The two walked quickly to Sefu, ignoring the greetings he aimed at the young king.
    "Your Highness! What do I owe the pleasure of this...lovely visit?" Sefu bowed dramatically. They couldn't have found out about his plan could they? No, no, that's impossible. No matter; he must get them to leave before they find the girl.
    "Can't a boy visit his uncle?" Tut answered playfully, "Is this a bad time?"
    "It's just such a surprise. We could have had a feast ready for your arrival. We don't even have a room ready for you and your advisor."
    "No matter; the servants can easily prepare us a room. We shall eat whatever your cook has to make tonight." The king's easy response made Sefu's smile falter. How was he going to get them to leave? His thoughts were interrupted by the general's voice.
    "If I may be so bold, it seems to me that you are trying to get us to leave," Sefu looked at him in shock, "Perhaps we are interrupting something?" Sefu shook his head violently.
    "Oh no. Not at""
    A servant ran into the hall and whispered into Sefu's ear after seeing their...er...guests. Tut watched in interest as his uncle's eyes widened significantly. Sefu turned his head to look at the scared servant and listened as he told him the girl had awakened. 'Why now of all time would that wretched girl wake up?' he thought. He half listened as the servant further explained that the girl had started to kill the people around her and was heading this way. Sefu stood up in shock and anger and slapped the servant.
    "You fool! How could you let her escape!" he shouted. General Horemheb raised an eyebrow.
    "Let who escape?" Sefu turned to him in anger.
    "None of your damned business!"
    "It is my business. If this person is a threat to the pharaoh, I must be ready to defend him." Just as Sefu was about to retort the doors opened once more. Every one stopped and stared as a girl entered the main hall.
    Tut blushed slightly and took in the beautiful girl's appearance. She had impossibly black hair, green eyes like a cat, and pale skin like the dead. Her clothes were the loose white clothing of that of a servant. It was completely white except for the drops of blood that had dripped down from her hands. Tutankhamen also noticed that her eyes were blank as if her mind was still asleep and her body was being used by something else.
    Sefu was the first to stop staring. He yelled for some guards outside to capture her. Then the girl spoke in some strange language that (unbeknownst to him) only Tutankhamen could understand.
    "It's useless. Your guards are probably dead. They can't catch me. No one can. Not even those pathetic gods can," she said. While her voice was a dull as her eyes, it filled with anger when mentioning the gods.
    The girl was about to step forward when a ring of light appeared around her. Everyone (AN:Sefu, Tut, General, and the servant if you forgot) winced at the bright light. While the girl struggled to move for exactly ten seconds then went still, they saw that Isis and Anubis had appeared with the light.
    Anubis ran to the girl and they had a sort of whispered conversation where Anubis seemed to be the only one talking. Isis stayed where she was. She watched as the mortals bowed and greeted them. Isis amusingly wondered if they knew Anubis want paying attention.
    Tutankhamen did know however and secretly watched as Anubis swiftly put a black choker with a small bell around the beautiful girl's pale neck. The girl's blank eyes widened slightly before fluttering closed and falling into Anubis's arms. Anubis gently placed the sleeping girl on the floor before walking back to his place by Isis's side. It was then that she addressed them.
    "This massacre was never supposed to happen. To prevent it from ever happening again, a spell has been placed on her. Never"I repeat" never remove that choker. Or else she will murder all of Egypt," Isis paused to let it sink in, "This little one is under our protection during her stay here. We trust you to take care of her."
    "Sefu," Anubis said causing the man to jump, "because of when you took her from the Nile there will be...problems. I will not elaborate. I will leave it to you to figure out."
    "Now then," Isis said, "We shall take our leave."
    "Wait a moment please," General said, "Since she is under your protection you must know her name. I believe I speak for all of us when I say that her name is a mystery." (AN: I believe that includes our lovely readers)Isis looked amused.
    'So the poor fools don't know her name. It's time to have some fun,' she turned to the girl and bent down to softly touch her face.
    "Such a trouble maker you are. All around you there is storm brewing. A storm with you at its center. Because of this I shall give you your name for your stay here," Isis turned around briskly and left with Anubis, her announcement lingering in the hall long after their departure.
    "Her name is Eydis."
