Some Days, I Drown

Some Days, I Drown

A Poem by Riley Adams
"

Written Senior Year of High School. A lament of not listening when I should have. No offense to the young, just a feeling at the time. It's about filling big shoes.

"

Some days, I drown

Some days, I drown in shallow waters.

Small people with big mouths,
Wading in what once was deep
A big blue ocean of lockers, consumed
By naivety and new experience

The cycle continues,
And I am without empathy
I should have listened when they told me to swim.
I’m rising, but falling
Below and above
All the expectations set.

I don’t recognize my own reflection-
Or perhaps it doesn’t recognize me.
I’m different than I used to be.
And the people that I need to see are gone.

Some days, I drown in freshmen.
