New World

New World

A Poem by Riley Adams
"

A comparison of long distance relationships and college to emigration, with an overall theme of change.

"

New World

Watercolors spread themselves
Over ever inch of me,
Golden hues behind soft clouds,
And endless, shining sea.

Across a vast horizon,
Lies a New World bright and clear.
And yet I stand the same, alone
Trembling with fear.

A ship has sailed the treacherous waves
To the place I do not know.
And with the ship, my heart has fled,
Though my body will not go.

My soul is ever constant,
Never straying from its ways,
Despite all the companions
That passed by with the days.

As the wind begins to blow the sails
Of the now great distanced ship,
My heart calls back with pleading cries
For me to make the trip.

The turning tide and gusting air
Makes the judgment ever harder…
To stay where my soul deems I should,
Or go with my heart in ardor?

I stand upon the empty shore,
A part of me ahead.
I give my will a chance to rest
And let the winds decide instead.
