Promise

Promise

A Poem by Riley Adams
"

Shakespearean (Anti) Love Sonnet. I find writing to be a nice way to let go. These are the bitter dregs at the bottom of a cup of tea.

"

Promise

A promise should be kept, or so I’m told,
So here’s the one I said I’d keep to you;
I promised you a sonnet, thoughts in bold,
And now, my heart and ink both black and blue:

Your eyes, my dear: as blue as oceans deep,
But not as deep as trust that I once had.
One lullaby and you’d send me to sleep,
Now dream I must, without you, and I’m glad.

The dreams you promised once in foolish youth
Brought comforts soft, that said, “be not afeard.”
At last I woke up, sick with bitter truth
And cried to dream again, with eyes unclear.

And in the end old words are all that’s left:
A promise that I make is one that’s kept.
