They Always Come Back

They Always Come Back

A Poem by Jerome F Knox III pseudonym Nefarious J. Dorsey

They always come back
Like bats being driven
From a cave
Remorseful
Apologetic
For the way they
Behaved
When they were with you
Like you can forgive
All the abuse
All the lies
Guess what?
No matter how
Hard you try
Or the alibis
I can't justify
Or rationalize
Why I should
Forgive you

The image of the bats coming back to roost is powerful. Sometimes that cave is home, defying logic and rational thought. Would the line 'or the alibis' work better if it said 'with your alibis'? Just a thought. Nice job

My favorite part of this poem is your opening simile. Those first three lines really changed the way I look at apologies and toxic relationships. The images in that comparison perfectly describe the cycle in a harmful relationship. The cycle starts with the harmful action, progresses to the remorseful apologies, then they try to return to roost in the eves of your life. Beautifully done with this poem.
