I'm Scots-Irish. I'm pretty sure my family crest is a moonshine still with two crossed shotguns. Our motto? "Shoot first, then have a drink!" Or something like that. It's historical! I've always loved heraldry. It's steeped in meaning and all those delicious things history lovers crave. But I also love the stories of those of us who don't have heraldry. Our shenanigans kept several kings tearing out their hair for centuries!

Zoe Dear,
I'm convinced your heraldry would be far more interesting and legit than most of those whose lustrous ancestry includes famous, kings, queens, and knights … blah-blah-blah!
And, I am quite sure I'd rather sit down to a meal, whisky, and fables shared with yours than all all the rest put together. 🍺💥🍺

Thanks for the lesson in heraldry. I was not aware of the meanings behind the different figures on the coats of arms.

It was a pleasure sharing a wee bit of my simple family history.
Yes, the study of family heraldry can be quite interesting, indeed, even entertaining; but, searcher beware of stereotypical examples of coats-of-arms.
If, for instance, you Google your family name's coat-of-arms, you will discover a plethora of different designs, some common (as mine), and many more extremely flourished, flamboyant, and resplendently presented … though, quite appealing and pride inducing; which, I suppose, is the aim of those who sell heraldic plaques and "authentically" charted rolls.

It can be a lot of fun seeing what's out there! ⁓ Richard🖌
