The Forest AwayA Poem by Richard LeviasThe woods are beautiful, dark, and deep. You came to wake, you came to sleep. Twisted branches and clusters of leaves. Bodies rot among the trees.
The path narrows thin, your body is cold. You walk among statues, broken and old. The lamppost stands, still lighting the way. You’ve gone deep into The Forest Away.
Upon mossy stones, and treacherous ground. Comes a hollow, empty, frightening sound. Far back in the trees, strange and eerie beasts lay
awake. You arrive at many roads which one will you take? They all just go deeper, no hope, no gain. Each step into darkness simply adds to your pain. You are taken deeper and farther led astray. You’ve gone deep into The Forest Away.
Trees curl around you like walls of a burrow. The path takes you farther into the dangerous furrow. The lamppost still stands and gives off its faint
light. A tiny, shining, glimmer breaks the night. Far forward is a hovel, cozy and warm. Inside is the owner, tired and torn. A creature furry, hospitable, and inviting A creature bold, tall, glistening and frightening. It leads you inside, a warm place to stay. You’ve gone deep into The Forest Away.
You depart from the house carrying a basket of goods. Far forward, is the deepest, darkest, place of the
woods. You stare into blackness, plants, and branches invite
you. They beckon you forward, between thick trunks you must
go through. Your heart beats slowly, your mind begins to sway. You’ve gone deep into The Forest Away.
Far forward, is a creature, its skin black and
brittle. Compared to its size, yours is quite little. It pierces you with deadly white eyes. Its volume is immense, its head strikes the skies. The trees are its soldiers, ready to stand. All part of the beast’s master plan. The world grows dark, frightening, and blurry. The creature moves around you, its flesh in a flurry. It hovers closer, is this your last day? You’ve gone far too deep into The Forest Away.
