Missing

Missing

A Chapter by Mariah Jane

“What do you know about the missing girl, Keeva, or whatever her name is?”

“Well, I know that she was supposed to have disappeared the same day that Tyón died in that car accident…Why?” Wren’s voice betrayed his curiosity.

“Have you seen her picture before?”

“No…why do you…?”

“Turn on the T.V.” Wren flipped on the news and looked at the girl on the screen.

“What about her, Xander?”

“Look at how much she looks like Tyón. Doesn’t that seem kind of strange to you; two women, disappearing on the same day, both of which look as if they could be twins?”  Wren furrowed his brows in thought.

“What are you saying, Xander? Do you think that the car accident wasn’t an accident after all? Or that maybe it was a set up and…”

“…And the reason they can’t find Tyón’s body is because it wasn’t in the car to begin with. Both of those women were kidnapped…but for what reason, I don’t know.” Wren shrugged.

“What is it to us?”  Xander thought for a moment.

“Get the case, Wren. Find a way and let’s go find out what is going on.”

“Xander, Are you crazy? Why on earth do you want to do something like that? This isn’t you and all.”

“Wren…come on! They’re hot! We can’t let them go to waste on some idiot…let’s get the glory by being the heroes.” The idea was slowly growing on both of them and Wren soon agreed to the plan.

“Let’s see what we can find out about the Scottish girl first. I will meet you in town tomorrow morning.” Xander was overly excited and Wren merely rolled his eyes. He knew when his friend got an idea for something, he would stop at nothing to get it solved or completed.

“I’ll see you there, then.” Wren replied with growing anxiety.

The following day Wren and Xander met at the station in town and, though it was raining, they made a beeline for Scotland.

“I think you are crazy.” Wren remarked as they wandered around the little cottage that had once been the home of Keeva, an orphaned girl who had spent the last several years teaching.

“Why on earth would you say that?” Xander asked as he looked up at his friend with a smirk on his face.

“Because, you think there is a connection between some random teacher and a professional soccer player…who have both gone missing…and I’m the one who is supposed to be the Investigator!”

“Yes, but then, with that in mind, you should probably know that they were both orphans, from the same orphanage mind you, and according to their records, neither of them had a known birth date.”

“What are you trying to say, Xander?”

“I’m saying that I think they are sisters…and not just that...I believe they just might be twins.” Wren looked blankly at Xander, whose eyes were bright, and then laughed heartily.

“You know, you may be right…but that doesn’t quite give us any information other then their history... and I still think you are crazy.”

“Can we go in?”

“In Where?”

“The house, you idiot.”

“Oh, Right. Yeah, we can go in.” Wren opened up the cottage and they slipped quietly inside.

Once their eyes had adjusted to the dim light, Wren snorted.

“Huh, she lived a pretty basic life, now didn’t she?”

“Yeah…look at this.” Xander was standing next to a raggedy, old chair, looking at the small side table next to it.

“What’s up?” Wren walked over and raised an eyebrow.

“She was here when she disappeared.”

“What makes you say that?”

“The hot chocolate is still full, and the book is open on the table.”

“She could have been called out suddenly…”

“By what phone? In what way? I Doubt she had any friends…”

“Now what makes you say that?” Wren gave him a skeptical look.

“I read her diary.” He pointed at the smaller book next to the other piece of literature. Wren’s face lit up and he grabbed it and flipped through it.

“Apparently she went to town the day she disappeared and met some annoying old man on the way. According to this, he threatened her.”

“Now, we have a lead. Let’s go to town and ask around.” Wren nodded and they replaced the book carefully before leaving.

That night, Wren sat on Xander’s couch and watched him pace.

“So, they did see this old man watching Keeva. If we can find any correlation between him and Tyón, then we can catch him.”

“Xander… they were both kidnapped/disappeared around the same time; within a few hours of one another…at least, that is what we assume, so how could he have done both? It isn’t possible.” Xander wrinkled his nose.

“Where was her accident?”

London… off of London Bridge.”

“Hmm… I think that a visit to her hotel is our next prerogative.” Wren sighed and then nodded.
