Dreamer's Reverie

Dreamer's Reverie

A Poem by Revery
"

This is a poem I wrote in ninth grade and took first place in school contest. I am not looking for critique, it is not a current work.

"

I am a dreamer
In a world of reality fighting against
My world of the appearance of reality
always trying to gain knowledge of everything because
I have seen, heard, and learned in such
a very special way
for this my understanding has no end

I am always moving on
Traveling seeing all
Always living life differently
meeting different people
having a life of chance and luck
but always seeing the beautiful side of everything

I live in the past and future
but never the present

Yes I am always running from problems
Always running back to a new beginning, a fresh start

Someday I might settle down
Learn to love one place
Take life one day at a time
and have one profession

But till that day I still shall be
a dreamer, always running.

Again, this is a poem I wrote as a child. I think it won because I poured myself so uninhibitedly onto the page. I wanted to put it on her so it remained cataloged with my work.

I'm impressed! There are not many 9th graders (especially boys) that are in touch with themselves or the English language to write like this (did you tweak it just a little before posting?) It shows a person that is looking forward (which is what many are doing at that age), but you capture the feelings of a "unsettled" soul (IMHO). A person that, until they find that person or thing that completely accepts them or satisfies them, will continue to wander.

Sounds familiar...I teach high school, and ninth graders have apparently not changed too much! :)

I like this because your life was a blank page at the time, you knew someday you would make important choices that would define your life, but at that point all was possible, all was within your grasp. That is an amazing, heady feeling, to not know how your life is going to turn out, but being so aware of all the endless possibilities.
