To Live as MenA Poem by BruceJacksonA old Civil Rights image had a man with a sign bearing the proclamation: I AM A MAN. The image stirred something within me as I saw it again.Call a man what he is And see it in his eyes. He stands tall. He holds himself erect. He is proud to be a man. Call a man a boy And you see the damage to his soul. He shrinks in stature. He stoops his posture. His stance says it all. We should call it as it is And live thus and so. We should live as men With our backs held straight. For we are not what they call us. This shall not be so. We are what God made us And that we shall be. So let it be with us No matter what they say we are. © 2011 BruceJackson
