Never That

Never That

A Poem by BruceJackson
"

Acceptance can be overshadowed by euphemisms and niceties that truly deceive us of the reality of how things really are. It can definitely rock one's world.

"

I read The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man,

Thinking to myself:

"Oh, never that."

I watched imation of Life many late nights.

I cried to myself:

"Never that."

I saw "Queen" on TV

And I swore to myself:

"Surely, never that."

Yet, despite my despise,

I had come to realize

That I could say and do all that I want.

The truth is told

Way beneath the depths of skin

And reveals who we really are.

My white blood runs pure

Until my African blood jumps in,

And then add some Choctaw at that.

I am mixed and blended

With ancestry for ages

and I am the one who says:

"Never that.

Never will I lie

To be accepted as something else,

Something other than I was born.

Never that for me.

Never that I say.

Never that.

Never that."
