A Chapter by Timothy Ryan

Pass around another bottle
Moving at the pace of life
A little ambition in each drop
Until it's all washed away

The aftertaste is harsh
Once it's all gone
All we have is a reminder
Of everything that once was

We once had dreams
But, they got out of the way for plans
We once wanted to see the world
But, the liquor-store was closer
We once wished upon the brightest star
But, now we sleep for our jobs in the morning
We once felt the pulse of life in the tips of our fingers
But, now we watch life from the stands

We stopped at nothing
The first chance we had
Running to nowhere
As fast as we can

Opportunity knocks once
Then the door slams shut
Waving farewell on its way out
As we let another life pass us by

We die everyday
Ignoring the lifeboats of ways out
As we drown in routine

Empty bottles
Losing lottery tickets
Filthy ashtrays
And dirty jokes

We know some that made it out
The ones who escaped the clutches of mediocrity
The ones who made lives for themselves
The ones who are dead and gone to this lifestyle

Where did they go?
What are they doing?
How did they do it?

And here we sit
Passing bottles
Laughing it all off
Having the time of our life

The good die young
So, we'll be here awhile.
