CANDY COATED TIMES

CANDY COATED TIMES

A Poem by Rene Velez

Jolly ranchers, Charleston chews,
Swedish fish, Caramel cubes
Sour patch kids, Hersey kisses

I can remember Christmas wishes
asking for bags full of candy
poverty it seemed kept them
in my dreams since money
was short and for tikes like me
money was never handy

Jelly bean bowls, Tootsie rolls,
Sour pears, Cherry gummy bears
Rock candy, and Good & Plenty

Wide eyed is a child when
there are sites to see or in the joy
of the many tastes that can be,
sticky fingered linted lollipops
were always better than any still in It's wrapper

Do you remember click clackers?

Gobstoppers, gummy lobsters
Peanuts chews, Mary Jane's
Chocolate money, and Bit'o honey

These days I get a kick
Watching my daughter in awe
Walking in the candy store
I share in her moments,
I pray It's what fathers are for...
With her smile as big as cheese
In that I fulfill a need  in me
and swim in a wealth of love

And to a degree
I awaken the kid in me
But this time with money
to taste those old memories again

Candy buttons, peanut butter cups,
Sugar daddy, chuckles,
giant gummy cola bottles.

If you can't be a kid at Christmas, check your pulse... I really liked this!

Stepping stones to the wimsy in every adult, our inner child never really leaves us, well done, good read.

Yes, I do remember click clackers!! I used to dream of an endless supply of Skittles and Fun Dip myself! And now, being an adult ("but this time with money"), its a different kind of dream. One of self-indulgence (because we can), and one of heroism in the eyes of our children. What a fun piece, thanks for sharing!

Ah..the memories and the flavor. I can still taste them all.. Thank you for taking me for a walk down memory lane.. There are a couple I don't know of but I will surely look out for them :) x

The days of the old candy stores. Now we have the check-out line at the grocery stores. A very nice poem. Took me back 45 years. Thank you for the excellent poem.

Being a Brit most of these names are a foreign language to me .. but oh, oh, oh what a wonderful one! My Saturday brain is trying to imagine the taste of
click clackers and what on earth did/do they do to the teeth?! As to Sour patch kids and Sugar daddy. methinks of lemony diaper-dressed babies in the first and sweet tasting chubby men figures .. the mind boggles a little.
Okay so, i might never know what they're all like to roll around the mouth or chew and chew. but thanks for adding to my vocabulary!

Nicely penned down... Every stanza reminds me that i haven't tasted any candy since last December.... You just revived my appetite...lol!
Childhood memories are sure a treat to look back at.....
