DEAD POETS

DEAD POETS

A Poem by Rene Velez

they say to write in solid structures
study classic forms and classic writers
but I'm a writer free of form
I don't conform to the classic ways
I am a poet of today, and so I
side step and let the educated mourn them

though I have respect for my elders
I aspire to be better and if
I fail my thoughts are still my own
from the depths of my center
where thoughts spill but words never enter
from the mastered forms of before

I've read the greats like Keats and Yeats
but I breathe in struggle, I don't relate
to their poetic ideals, my misery is real
there are trials in life I can not appeal

greats of English word they served it well
within their time, my anvil to quell
I jot in rhyme I breathe sublime, in this time

for they are done caring
and I, not a thin paring

@ invs: I appreciate the critique, to each his own I say, but does expression and poetry have to be put in a box and stored away, or can it just over flow and become something new...I am only stating poetry has to progress in order for it not to die, it's not very popular these days unless your sitting drivel on stage, stagnant is not what I want for the art of poetry...I did say I respected the greats though...I didn't put them down...

OH I LOVE THIS! OFTEN TIMES PEOPLE WORRY ABOUT FORM AND CORRECT SPELLING OR GRAMMAR SO MUCH THAT THEY FORGET ABOUT SELF EXPRESSION. POETRY IS ART AND ART IS AN EXPRESSION OF SELF. WE ARE FREE TO EXPRESS OUR FEELINGS IN ANY WAY/FORM WE WANT TO, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT WE ARE NOT TALENTED, OR THAT IF A POEM IS WRITTEN WITHOUT ANY FORM OR RHYME OR EVEN CORRECT GRAMMAR/SPELLING, IT'S "WRONG". IT'S ALL ABOUT SELF EXPRESSION PEOPLE, COME ON!

This flowed so well! It was fantastic. Your concept is so easy to relate to, seeing that all new poets are so unique, and from what I've noticed raw. I enjoyed reading this.

Free form is a great tool for writing. No restriction on thought and idea. I do love the classic forms though. Sonnets are beautiful but I do not possess the ability to write them. I will try at some point

This made me ponder quite a lot about where I am with my own writing. Whether I'm conforming with the world or actually letting my own mind display what it wants. A brilliant piece. Wonderful! :)

One of the things that draws me to poetry is the freedom and expression. I hate it when people say poetry has to rhyme or have a certain structure because that is all bullshit. All poetry has to be is an expression of yourself, of your thoughts or ideas. I'm certainly not taking anything away from the greats, but rigidity and structure doesn't appeal to me as a writer. I still read Yeats and Elliot, but I just don't write like they did.
