AFFINITY

AFFINITY

A Poem by Rene Velez

I am part of places
I've never been,
feet on the Serengeti,
eyes upon the Andes,

cultures in percentages,
clarity in ambiguities,
hand full of affinities,

just to see
within the family,
names combined,
moments in time,

and on the chest
the family crest...
dancing shadows,
from afro to arrows,
connecting to my kin,
my feather in the wind,

I, tapas and the torah,
castanets and fedoras...
I can finally feel the
comfort of my own skin.

this is a striking piece
powerful and exquisitely worked
that connection we share by blood and culture
to places we've never been
we are
in a way
people we've never met
and yet
so uniquely ourselves and free in that expression
well written piece
