INNOCENTA Poem by Rene VelezFor Kahlief BrowderI wish I was a black bird so I could slip through the bars, leaving the mental scars behind me. I am in decline, this is a plea, no one can see the innocence inside me I am battered and bruised. I stand accused of some absurdity. I am a product of an unjust society. I have cut and scratched my skin, confined within a justice system, where people like me can not win, Suspended bedsheets in the air, missing the smell of my mother's hair, a life not so simple for a young man of principal, and the irrelevance, of maintaining my innocence. © 2017 Rene VelezReviews
