OVERCAST

OVERCAST

A Poem by Rene Velez

The morning overcast,
and daily worries
hang like clouds
with morning coffee.

A dog with loving eyes.
My morning companion
on the balcony. Wet nose
sniffing the air. Her ears
alert to every sound,
quietly watching the cars
go by.

News reporters,
reporting news
in the background,
voicing concerns about
the state of a nation.
A country divided.

And comes a nagging
feeling in the pit of my
stomach, asking,
what's for breakfast?
