TWO TERMS

TWO TERMS

A Poem by Rene Velez

Some share in
self preservation,
in the evasion of
their true self, in
limbo between love
and wealth, snug
in their bible belts,

Facing the sun
and the Earth
burning beneath
their feet,
deep in the turn
without human
concern,

match for match,
and
strike for strike,
from minor
to major war,
through diplomatic
doors and
Presidential terms,

waiting for the
world to burn,
to reaffirm what
mad men yearn,

Forty five,
and some
with two terms,
the past to return,
because we still
haven't learned.

I like it, not often do I read poetry aimed at social commentary. I like the rhyming.
