SIDE OF THE FENCE

SIDE OF THE FENCE

A Poem by Rene Velez

Progress has a cost.
Many lives have been
lost in the name of progress.
I guess it depends
on what side of the fence
you live on, or spit on.

It's hard for a man of color
to find his place, mind his space
without being beaten on
by bullets or police batons

Yeah its that same old song
the one they sang too long,
Hoping things would change.

Don't you find it strange, that
they sing along till the bodies gone
but yet ain't nothing change.

I guess it depends
on what side of the fence
you live on or spit on.
to actually believe things
have changed.

But brothers are still dying.
