INNER DEPTHS

INNER DEPTHS

A Poem by Rene Velez

I am by the edge
wondering how deep
the lake sits, could I make it
to the other side?
head above water,
or underneath without air,
alone to my inner depths,
do I have the strength to tread
bottomless to reach the surface?
where all is connected within the pattern,
fighting like the ancestors of old
in timeless defiance,
or will I answer the call
of ancestral drums,
into the hands of compassion,
failing the self in perilous genes,
but living is human and so I choose
to breathe.

Excellent - we should all be able to relate to this! I guess most of us, at some stage, have this sort of journey to make and thankfully the imperative to choose life is stong. I particularly liked you last few lines - 'ancestral drums', 'perilous genes'!
Good work,
Alan
