A FORCE

A FORCE

A Poem by Rene Velez

For years I recognized it
a force of it's own,
as I child I would fear it
and I too young to tame
its power,

it would hold my fear
but I stood defiant
knowing it would not win
we were accustomed
to having nothing
but happiness had no cost
to us it was a given,
knowing that it was free

as I got older
I grew stronger mentally
and learned, it was a
device created to instill fear
a machine of wood and steel

and on my eighteenth birthday
I looked right in the eye
of that beast
and purchased a ticket for that
old roller coaster, Coney Island
called...

The Cyclone.

Ah roller coasters. Great job describing the childhood anxiety of building up to nerve to ride the beast. I love roller coasters. I've never been on the Coney Island Cyclone though. Hopefully I'll get to it one day. A combat landing in a C-130 transport plane is a wild ride too. Don't think I'm going on that one again though.
