PEYOTE

PEYOTE

A Poem by Rene Velez

PEYOTE

The waterfall stands still,
birds trapped in mid flight
I stare directly into the sun,
no shadows will cast in this light
and I am outdone like a fly preening its eyes

there is a fight that drums a war song,
vengeful cries of sleeping warriors
in breathless free will,
war paint on sun dried skin

Brave the night and let the eagle
claw the moon red till the stars
twinkle a pinkish diamond hue

I will await the blue deer crossing
and feed ancestral liquid into my soul
shaman will dance opening the heavens
and protect me from the evil spirits
with feathered headdress and rattles
that they hold.
